Global Wind Energy Council: innovation and policy drive rapid expansion of offshore wind energy
Oct 08, 2024 by Energy Connects
In an exclusive studio interview at the World Utilities Congress 2024, Ben Backwell, CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council, highlighted the rapid development of offshore wind energy and its critical role in the global transition to renewable energy. He explained how offshore wind had progressed from a niche technology to a mainstream solution, thanks to its ability to scale efficiently, reduce costs, and avoid land-use conflicts in densely populated areas. Backwell also noted that governments and organisations, through initiatives such as the Global Offshore Wind Alliance, had set ambitious targets to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.
